I hear this one regularly: “I don’t need to lift weights. I get enough exercise at work.”
The arborist with chronic low back pain said something like this. He climbs trees for a living. He hauls equipment, pulls himself up with his arms, carries weight across uneven terrain for hours every day. By any reasonable measure, he is physically active. He is also wearing Icy Hot back pads to get through that work, taking four to six ibuprofen a day, and living in constant fear that the next awkward movement is the one that takes him out for a month.
His job is loading his body. His body does not have the capacity to handle that load without a cost. That gap is the problem, and his job is not closing it. It is creating it.
This is the distinction that most physically active workers have never been given: occupational loading is not the same as progressive resistance training. And confusing the two is one of the most reliable ways to develop chronic pain in a trade job.
What Occupational Loading Does and Doesn’t Do
Physical labor loads the body. Construction, landscaping, arboriculture, nursing, manufacturing, farming, these jobs put real demands on the musculoskeletal system. Workers in these trades are generally not deconditioned in the way a sedentary office worker is.
But occupational loading has specific characteristics that make it different from resistance training:
It is not progressive. Resistance training applies a carefully increasing load over time, giving the tissue a stimulus to adapt and then recover. Occupational loading applies roughly the same demands every day. The body adapts to that fixed demand early in the career, and then the tissue is simply maintained at that adaptation level, not developed beyond it. When the demand spikes (a heavier lift, a longer day, a different task), there is no reserve.
It is not balanced. Most trades involve repetitive patterns in specific planes of motion. The arborist pulls and climbs. The framing carpenter swings a hammer. The nurse lifts and transfers patients in similar patterns repeatedly. The muscles that do these movements may become conditioned to them. The opposing muscles, the stabilizers, and the tissues loaded in different planes remain underdeveloped.
It does not allow adequate recovery. Resistance training is followed by rest and recovery, the adaptation happens during the recovery period, not during the training itself. Occupational loading does not have scheduled recovery. Five-day weeks with identical loading patterns accumulate stress without the recovery window that drives adaptation.
The load is often in high-risk positions. Occupational loading frequently involves asymmetric loading, forward flexion under load, and awkward reaching that a well-designed resistance training program would avoid or approach carefully. These positions load the spine and joints in their most mechanically vulnerable ranges without the preparation that makes those positions safe.
The result is a body that can handle the specific, repetitive demands of the job and little else, and that has accumulated years of tissue stress without the offsetting adaptation that comes from progressive, balanced loading.
The Research on Physical Laborers and Pain
The epidemiological data on musculoskeletal pain in physical workers is consistent and sobering. Trades workers, healthcare workers, and those in physically demanding occupations have higher rates of low back pain, shoulder pain, and chronic musculoskeletal conditions than sedentary office workers.
This surprises some people. The intuition is that physical activity protects against pain. The research says the relationship is more complex. High physical work demands without adequate recovery and without protective resistance training capacity is a reliable predictor of musculoskeletal injury and chronic pain. The occupational load is the variable that matters, not just whether the person is physically active.
A 2019 meta-analysis on occupational physical activity and low back pain found that high occupational physical activity was associated with increased low back pain risk compared to moderate occupational activity. The relationship is not linear. Activity that exceeds tissue capacity is a risk factor regardless of whether it occurs in a gym or at a job site.
What Resistance Training Does That Work Cannot
Progressive resistance training builds something that occupational loading does not: a capacity reserve.
When a worker has a posterior chain (glutes, hamstrings, spinal extensors) that is genuinely strong through progressive loading, their occupational demands occupy a smaller fraction of their total capacity. A 300-pound deadlift is not a realistic requirement for most trades workers. But a 300-pound deadlift capacity means that a 50-pound awkward lift at work is not approaching the tissue’s threshold. That gap is the protection.
Resistance training also develops the muscles that occupational patterns do not. For someone whose job involves forward flexion and pulling, the posterior chain and shoulder retractors are chronically underloaded relative to the anterior chain and pulling muscles. This imbalance, over years, produces the postural and structural contributors to chronic pain. Resistance training, programmed with this imbalance in mind, addresses it directly.
The arborist’s problem is not that he moves too much. It is that the movement his job requires has never been supplemented with the loading that would make it sustainable. He needs a deadlift that progressively loads his lumbar extensors. He needs carries that build his trunk stability. He needs shoulder work that offsets the pulling and climbing demands. None of this comes from climbing trees.
What to Actually Do About It
The resistance training program for a physical laborer does not need to replicate their work. It needs to complement it.
The priority areas, for most trades workers, are:
Posterior chain loading. Hip hinge patterns (deadlifts, Romanian deadlifts, trap bar variations) that build glute and lumbar extensor capacity in the movement patterns most loaded by physical work. This is the foundation.
Trunk stability under load. Loaded carries, anti-rotation work, and core bracing patterns that build the intra-abdominal pressure management that protects the spine during the asymmetric loading of physical work.
Opposing pattern work. For workers whose jobs are primarily pulling and flexion-dominant, horizontal and vertical pressing and thoracic extension work balance the loading equation.
Recovery programming. For workers with heavy five-day schedules, resistance training three days per week with adequate recovery is more productive than adding more daily movement. The adaptation happens in the recovery.
FAQ
If I am already exhausted from work, how do I fit in resistance training?
The goal is not to add significant training volume on top of a demanding job. Two to three sessions per week of thirty to forty-five minutes, focused on the specific patterns that complement occupational demands, is enough. The return on investment is high even with modest volume.
Won’t strength training make me more sore for work?
Initially, yes. The first few weeks of adding resistance training to a physically demanding job produces adaptation soreness. Within four to six weeks, most workers report that the training has reduced their job-related soreness, not increased it. The capacity builds faster than the soreness persists.
What if I have an injury from work right now?
The injury addresses the acute problem. The resistance training program prevents the next one. In most cases, we can begin progressive loading within the appropriate pain-free ranges while the acute tissue is recovering, waiting until you are fully healed is rarely necessary.
