You have probably heard of SPP, specific physical preparation. Runners build running fitness. Swimmers build swimming fitness. Powerlifters train the powerlifts.
What most people have not heard of is GPP, general physical preparedness. And in my experience as both a clinician and someone who trains seriously, it may be the most underused concept in injury prevention and long-term physical resilience.
GPP is not a specific workout. It is a training philosophy. And understanding it changes how you think about movement, longevity, and the relationship between your fitness and your health.
What GPP Actually Is
General physical preparedness refers to the broad physical foundation that supports all specific activities, strength, endurance, mobility, coordination, and work capacity built across multiple movement patterns and energy systems.
The term comes from Soviet sports science, where coaches recognized that athletes with a strong GPP base adapted faster to sport-specific training, recovered better between sessions, and sustained fewer injuries over long careers. The GPP base was built in the off-season, then specific training was layered on top during competition preparation.
The principle translates directly outside of elite sport. For the active adult (the recreational runner, the CrossFitter, the weekend golfer, the person who wants to be physically capable through their fifties, sixties, and beyond) GPP is the difference between a body that handles varied physical demands and one that handles one thing and falls apart when life asks for something else.
Why Most Training Programs Miss It
The fitness industry defaults to specificity. You want to get stronger (follow a powerlifting program. You want to run faster) follow a running program. You want to lose weight, do metabolic conditioning. These are not wrong. They are incomplete.
Specificity is efficient. GPP is resilient.
A runner who only runs develops outstanding cardiovascular capacity and terrible load tolerance through the upper body, hips, and lateral movement patterns. A weightlifter who only lifts develops impressive strength in specific patterns and limited capacity for anything that does not follow those patterns. When their specific activity is disrupted (an injury, a change in schedule, a season’s end) they have built a narrow capability that does not transfer.
GPP fills the gaps. It is the strength work a runner does to protect the knee and hip. It is the carries and loaded movement a weightlifter does to build work capacity. It is the combination of heavy compound movements, conditioning work, and movement variety that produces a body capable of handling whatever life demands.
What GPP Looks Like in Practice
GPP is not a specific modality. It is a principle. What it looks like depends on where the gaps in your physical capacity are.
For most people I see in clinical practice (who have a primary activity they love and a lot of neglected capacity around it) GPP work tends to involve these elements:
Heavy compound loading. Deadlifts, squats, presses, rows. Not in a sport-specific context, as foundational strength work that builds tissue capacity across the full body. A runner who deadlifts is building posterior chain resilience that protects their hamstrings, glutes, and lower back from the repetitive demands of running volume.
Loaded carries. Farmer carries, suitcase carries, overhead carries. These build grip strength, shoulder stability, trunk coordination, and work capacity simultaneously. They are one of the most time-efficient GPP tools I know.
Conditioning variety. Rowing, cycling, walking, swimming, rotating through different cardiovascular demands builds aerobic capacity across a broader energy system than a single modality develops. It also reduces the repetitive stress load on any single joint or tissue.
Mobility work with purpose. Not passive stretching for its own sake, but controlled articular rotations and loaded mobility work that builds range and strength at the end range simultaneously. The goal is position tolerance, not flexibility for its own sake.
GPP and Injury Prevention
The connection between GPP and injury risk is direct. Most overuse injuries (the most common category of injury in active adults) reflect a capacity gap. The tissue’s tolerance was below the specific demand placed on it.
Building GPP raises the ceiling. A higher strength baseline means the body tolerates more of any specific activity before reaching the threshold that produces injury. A higher work capacity means the body recovers faster between training sessions and accumulates less cumulative load between adequate recovery periods.
The arborist who wears Icy Hot to work every day does not just need his back treated. He needs a GPP base that makes tree climbing occupiable at the loads his job requires. The runner training for her first half marathon does not just need her hip assessed, she needs the hip and glute capacity that makes thirty miles a week of training load manageable.
Treatment addresses the current injury. GPP prevents the next one.

Do I need to go to a specific gym to build GPP?
No. GPP can be built with minimal equipment. Heavy compound movements with a barbell or dumbbells, loaded carries, and varied cardiovascular work cover the fundamentals. The most important variable is consistency and progressive loading over time, not facility access.
Can older adults build GPP?
Yes, and the argument for GPP is arguably stronger for older adults than any other population. The research on resistance training for longevity, fall prevention, metabolic health, and function is among the most robust in preventive medicine. Building GPP in your fifties and sixties does not just protect athletic performance. It protects independence.
