Parents who bring their children in for chiropractic care often come in with a mix of curiosity and caution. They have done some research, heard from a friend, or tried everything else for their child’s discomfort and decided it was worth exploring. What they almost always want, before anything else, is reassurance that this is safe.
I want to answer that question directly, and then address the things I hear most often from parents.
Pediatric chiropractic, when performed by a provider trained in pediatric care, is safe. The techniques used for infants, toddlers, and children are fundamentally different from what you might picture when you think about chiropractic, there is no high-velocity adjustment, no cracking or popping. For infants, the pressure used is comparable to the pressure you would use to check the ripeness of a tomato. The goal is gentle, specific, appropriate.
Why Children See a Chiropractor
The most common reasons families come to see me include:
Birth trauma and latching difficulties in infants. The birth process (even an uncomplicated vaginal delivery) places significant compressive and rotational force on the infant’s cervical spine. A C-section or a birth with assisted delivery (forceps or vacuum) can increase this. When the cervical joints and surrounding tissue are restricted after delivery, infants may show difficulty with latching on one side, preference for turning their head in one direction, or general fussiness.
Chiropractic evaluation and gentle mobilization of the upper cervical spine can address these restrictions and support more comfortable, symmetric movement.
Colic and digestive discomfort. The evidence here is mixed, but the physiological rationale is real: the vagus nerve, which governs much of the parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) function of the body, exits the brainstem and passes through the upper cervical region. Restriction in the upper cervical joints can influence vagal tone. Many families report significant improvement in colicky symptoms following gentle cervical work.
Ear infections (recurrent otitis media). Chiropractic care does not treat the ear infection itself. What it addresses is drainage, the Eustachian tube is partially governed by the tensor veli palatini muscle, which is innervated by branches of the trigeminal nerve. Upper cervical restriction can affect the muscle tone that governs Eustachian tube drainage. Some families find that chiropractic care, combined with standard medical care, reduces the frequency of ear infections.
Growing pains and sports-related musculoskeletal complaints. Older children and adolescents present with many of the same complaints I see in adults (low back pain, hip pain, shoulder pain) often in the context of sports or high activity volumes. The treatment approach for a twelve-year-old athlete with hip pain is different from an adult, but the framework is the same: assess the mechanics, address the restriction, build the capacity.
What Pediatric Adjustments Look Like
For infants, the adjustment is the lightest touch possible, typically applied with a fingertip to the affected spinal segment while the baby is held or lying comfortably. There is no thrust, no popping, no dramatic movement. Most babies tolerate it without any distress. Many fall asleep during the session.
For toddlers and young children, the techniques are similarly gentle, age-appropriate pressure, shorter sessions, and a lot of attention to keeping the child comfortable and calm. I find that kids in this age group often enjoy the attention and novelty of the visit once they feel safe.
For older children and adolescents, the approach is more similar to adult care, with adjustments in pressure and range appropriate to the developing spine.
What I Tell Every Parent Before the First Visit
I tell parents three things.
First, I will explain everything before I do it. You will know exactly what I am doing and why, and you are welcome to observe the entire session.
Second, your child will communicate what they can tolerate. We follow their lead. If something is uncomfortable, we stop and reassess.
Third, the goal is to support your child’s developing nervous system and musculoskeletal structure, not to commit them to ongoing care indefinitely. Some children need a handful of visits. Some benefit from periodic check-ins through growth spurts or sports seasons. I give you an honest picture of what I expect and why.
FAQ
Is chiropractic safe for babies?
Yes, when provided by a chiropractor trained in pediatric techniques. The adjustments used for infants use minimal force, comparable to the gentle pressure you would use to test a soft fruit. The focus is on restoring comfortable range of motion and nervous system balance.
At what age can a child see a chiropractor?
There is no minimum age. I see newborns (sometimes within the first week of life) when birth trauma or latching difficulties are present. The techniques are always adapted to the child’s age and size.
Will my child’s pediatrician approve?
Pediatric chiropractic care is increasingly recognized within integrative medical communities. I encourage open communication with your child’s pediatrician and am happy to coordinate care. If there is an underlying medical condition present, I work alongside the medical team, not instead of it.
