Orthotic management has been used for years in the management of lower extremity injuries, and like all facets of medicine it continues to evolve. Here at Central Ohio Spine and Joint we are routinely faced with the challenges of managing lower extremity injuries and custom orthotics provide us with a huge advantage in managing tough cases.

Orthotic management is not only for lower extremity injuries.  Our functional approach to evaluating patients requires we look at the body globally and not just focus on the areas that hurt. Take someone with low back pain for example…during the evaluation process we identify that patient as having serve instability in their feet (flat feet).  While we will treat the localized regions of pain in the lower back if we do not address this instability back pain will more than likely come back.

We have partnered with Xtreme Footwerks and Shawn Eno to provide an exceptional option for patients we fell would benefit from orthotic management.  Here is a list of common injuries and disorders we routinely treat with the help of custom orthoics:

  • Piriformis Syndrome
  • IT Band Syndrome
  • Peroneal Tendinitis
  • Tibialis Posterior Tendinitis and Dysfunction
  • Compartment Syndrome
  • Morton’s Neuroma
  • Metatarsalgia
  • Gout
  • Morton’s Toe
  • Hallux Limitus and Rigitus
  • Lis Franc Injury and Sprain
  • Metatarsal Stress Fractures
  • Navicular Accessory
  • Haglund’s Deformity
  • Osgood Schlatter Disease
  • Medial Calcaneal Nerve Entrapment
  • Sesmoiditis
  • Plantar Plate Rupture
  • Plantar Fascitis
  • Fat Pad Atrophy
  • Patellar Tendinitis
  • Achilles Tendinitis
  • Forefoot Varum
  • Rearfoot Varum
  • Rigid Cavus/Supinatory Foot Type
  • Pronation

Does everyone that has flat feet need orthotics?

In our opinion, NO. In fact, the vast majority of people with flat feet do not need orthotic management.  In our clinic we will start with exercises in order to either mobilize or strengthen the foot.  We have had significant success with this as a starting point. Their are a few cases in which we will recommend custom orthotics. They included:

1. Fail trail of care including rehabilitation.

2. True structural deformity

Are orthotics off the shelf the same thing?

While they may appear to be similar they are NOT the same. Our custom orthotics are designed not only specific to your structure but also your functional mechanics. Here is a video of the process a patient goes through when getting fit for custom othotics.

Are custom orthotics covered by insurance?

Our custom orthotics are not covered but tradition insurance plans. Unfortunately, insurance carriers do not understand the value of custom orthotics for the management of conditions like knee, hip or back pain.  We can except HSA or FSA as payments for orthotics.

How much do they cost?

The cost of our custom orthotics are $325.  This includes a full 40 min evaluation by our providers, custom orthotic construction by Xtreme Footwerks, and a 30 min orthtoic fitting once complete.
